Karnataka All-Rounder Krishnappa Gowtham Calls Time on 14-Year Cricket Career
Bengaluru, December 22, 2025 – Former India and Karnataka all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, drawing the curtains on a professional career spanning nearly 14 years. The 37-year-old made the emotional announcement at the Karnataka State Cricket Association office in Bengaluru on Monday, surrounded by his parents, wife, and daughter.
KSCA president and former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad attended the press conference alongside vice-president Sujith Somasundar and secretary Santosh Menon. Prasad praised the retiring all-rounder for his contributions to Karnataka cricket and his unwavering loyalty to the state.
An Emotional Decision to Hang Up His Boots
Speaking about his retirement decision, Gowtham revealed it was largely emotional, explaining he now wants to contribute to the game differently by helping young players develop and avoid the mistakes he made during his playing days.
“I have made a lot of comebacks, returning from the brink on more than one occasion,” Gowtham said during the announcement. He added that making another comeback would have been unfair to the youngsters who represent Karnataka’s future.
The off-spinner last played competitive cricket in September 2024 and has since been working as a cricket expert with Star Sports, providing analysis and commentary in vernacular languages.
Domestic Cricket Statistics and Career Highlights
Gowtham retires as one of Karnataka’s most reliable performers across all formats. The all-rounder finished his domestic career with 394 wickets and 2,783 runs, including a century and five half-centuries in Ranji Trophy cricket.
In first-class cricket, he played 59 matches taking 224 wickets, while in List A cricket, he featured in 68 matches claiming 96 wickets. His T20 career saw him play 92 matches, picking up 74 wickets at an economy rate of 7.18, showcasing his value as a complete all-rounder.
Gowtham made his Ranji Trophy debut on November 17, 2012, for Karnataka against Uttar Pradesh. He announced his arrival by dismissing big names like Suresh Raina in his very first match. The 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season proved to be his breakthrough year, where he captured 27 wickets in just eight matches.
IPL Journey: From Record Breaker to Five-Franchise Star
Gowtham’s Indian Premier League career was nothing short of remarkable. He rose to prominence when Chennai Super Kings bought him for INR 9.25 crore at the IPL 2021 auction, making him the most expensive uncapped Indian player at that time.
Throughout his IPL career, the Karnataka all-rounder represented five franchises: Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants. His final IPL appearance came in May 2024, playing for Lucknow Super Giants against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
According to Vegas11 News, Gowtham’s powerful hitting and intelligent off-spin bowling made him a valuable asset in the T20 format, with a strike rate of 158.18 demonstrating his explosive batting capabilities down the order.
Brief But Memorable International Career
Gowtham earned his India cap under unusual circumstances during the Sri Lanka tour in 2021, initially named as a net bowler before getting his opportunity when several senior players were sidelined due to Covid-19.
He made his lone ODI appearance on July 23, 2021, against Sri Lanka in Colombo. His only international wicket came in that match when he dismissed wicketkeeper Minod Bhanuka, finishing with figures of 1/49. Despite limited international opportunities, Gowtham represented India A on multiple occasions and came close to earning more caps in other formats.
Venkatesh Prasad’s Tribute to the Retiring Star
During the retirement announcement, KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad paid tribute to Gowtham’s career. Prasad said the retiring all-rounder has been a fantastic cricketer and a fighter to the core, praising his commitment, fitness, and loyalty to Karnataka despite having opportunities to play elsewhere.
Prasad highlighted that Gowtham’s record of nearly 400 wickets demonstrated his dedication and longevity in the game. The former India pacer noted that staying loyal to Karnataka throughout his career showed the all-rounder’s character and commitment to his home state.
Post-Retirement Plans and Continued Cricket Involvement
Retirement does not mean Gowtham is stepping away from cricket entirely. He has already taken up a mentoring role with the Mysuru Warriors during the 2025 season, serving as both mentor and player. Additionally, he has become a familiar voice in vernacular cricket commentary over the past couple of years.
His transition from player to mentor and commentator ensures that his vast experience and knowledge of the game will continue to benefit Karnataka cricket and the broader cricket community. Vegas11 News reports that Gowtham’s focus will now shift to helping young cricketers navigate their careers more effectively.
Legacy of a Domestic Cricket Stalwart
Krishnappa Gowtham leaves behind a legacy built on grit, determination, and consistent performances. Known for his resilience and fierce competitiveness, he consistently performed against elite opposition throughout his career. His 2018-19 season stands out as a highlight, when he played a crucial role in Karnataka’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title-winning campaign.
The off-spinner, nicknamed “Bhajji” during his early days due to similarities with Harbhajan Singh’s bowling action, also smashed his maiden first-class century against Assam in Mysuru during the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy. That innings highlighted his value as a genuine all-rounder who could contribute significantly with both bat and ball.
As Krishnappa Gowtham transitions from the field to the commentary box and mentoring roles, Karnataka cricket bids farewell to one of its most dedicated servants. His 14-year journey represents the story of a fighter who maximized his talent and remained committed to his craft until the very end.
