Abhishek Sharma Stars as India Beat Afghanistan in T20I Opener

India began their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a comfortable seven-wicket win, chasing down a modest target with more than six overs to spare. Put in to bat after losing the toss, Afghanistan could only manage 156/8, and India knocked off the runs in 13.4 overs to finish on 157/3.

Afghanistan Innings: Azmatullah Omarzai Fights a Lone Battle

Afghanistan’s top order buckled almost immediately. Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell for a golden duck in the very second ball of the innings, caught behind off Jasprit Bumrah, and the visitors were reduced to 5/1 before they had settled in. Ibrahim Zadran was run out for 11, and quick wickets for Sediqullah Atal, Gulbadin Naib, and Darwish Rasooli left Afghanistan tottering at 43/5 inside seven overs.

What followed was a rescue act built almost entirely around Azmatullah Omarzai. Coming in with his side under pressure, Omarzai counter-attacked with 64 off just 44 balls, striking four fours and four sixes to drag Afghanistan toward a defendable score. He found an able partner in Mohammad Nabi, who chipped in with 33 off 27 deliveries, and the pair added crucial runs before both fell in the space of two overs. Omarzai remained unbeaten as Afghanistan closed on 156/8, a total that always looked below par on a good Delhi pitch.

For India, Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler with figures of 3/19 from his four overs, while Bumrah, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakaravarthy picked up a wicket apiece to keep things tight through the middle overs.

India Chase Home Behind Abhishek Sharma Fireworks

Chasing 157, India lost Sanju Samson early for 10, but that was as close as Afghanistan came to putting up a fight. Abhishek Sharma then took the game away from the bowlers with a sensational 82 off just 32 balls, laced with seven fours and seven sixes at a strike rate above 256. He put on a match-defining stand with Ishan Kishan, who supported him well with a fluent 42 off 33 balls.

Mohammad Nabi eventually broke the partnership, dismissing both set batters in quick succession, but by then the equation was well under control. Shreyas Iyer, leading the side, stayed unbeaten on 8 alongside Tilak Varma as India cruised to 157/3 in 13.4 overs to seal the win by seven wickets with 38 balls remaining.

Abhishek Sharma was a deserving Player of the Match for his all-round effort, an economical bowling spell followed by his explosive 82. The win puts India 1-0 ahead in the three-match series, with the second T20I set to follow at the same venue.
