GT vs CSK IPL 2026 produced one of the most one-sided results of the season. At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 21, Gujarat Titans annihilated Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs in Match 66 to officially punch their ticket to the playoffs. Batting first after CSK won the toss and chose to bowl, GT blazed to 229/4 in 20 overs. Their bowlers then did the rest — reducing CSK to a sorry 140 all out in just 13.4 overs.
With this comprehensive victory, Gujarat Titans have confirmed their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs as the third team to qualify, joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad. For Chennai Super Kings, the season ends in deep disappointment. Six wins from 14 matches, no playoff cricket — this was not the campaign their fans had scripted.
“This was exactly the kind of game we needed,” said Gujarat captain Shubman Gill at the post-match presentation. “The top order batted brilliantly, and the bowlers finished it off. We are ready for the playoffs.”
Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill Put GT in Command
Gujarat came out firing from ball one in this GT vs CSK IPL 2026 contest. Sai Sudharsan, arguably the most consistent batter of IPL 2026, was once again the cornerstone. His 84 off 53 balls included 7 fours and 4 sixes, maintaining a pristine strike rate of 158.49 while anchoring and accelerating in equal measure.
Opening partner and captain Shubman Gill matched him blow for blow. His 64 off 37 balls — 7 fours and 3 sixes — was the innings of a man with full confidence in his game. Gill was eventually caught by Shivam Dube off Spencer Johnson in the 12th over, but by then, the opening stand had carried GT past 125 without loss. The foundation was rock solid.
For CSK bowlers, there was no respite in this game. Spencer Johnson gave away 47 runs from 4 overs. Anshul Kamboj was taken apart for 56 from 4 overs at an economy of 14.00. Only Mukesh Choudhary held any shape, ending with 1/36 from his 4 overs.
Jos Buttler Takes GT Past 229 With a Blistering Cameo
Sudharsan fell at 207/2 and Washington Sundar was run out off the very next delivery. Two wickets in two balls and suddenly the momentum threatened to ease. Jos Buttler had other ideas.
The wicketkeeper-batter, one of the standout imports in IPL 2026, walked in and immediately took ownership. His unbeaten 57 off just 27 balls — 5 fours, 4 sixes, strike rate 211.11 — turned a very good score into a truly intimidating one. Buttler did not look like a batter hunting boundaries; he looked like a man executing a plan to perfection.
“Once Buttler gets in, there is very little you can do,” said Vegas11 News analyst Shantanu Rawat after the innings. “He reads the field instinctively, and in those final three overs, he was simply unstoppable.”
Total: 229/4 in 20 overs. CSK needed to bat out of their skin. They did not come close.
CSK Batting Crumbles in 13.4 Overs
The CSK chase in this GT vs CSK IPL 2026 match started badly and collapsed completely.
Mohammed Siraj had Sanju Samson — keeping wickets for CSK this season — caught by Buttler off the very first ball of the innings for a golden duck. Before the crowd had even settled into their seats, 0 for 1 was on the board at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
It got worse quickly. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the CSK captain and normally the bedrock of their batting, was bowled by Siraj for 16 off 7 balls. Urvil Patel lasted just two deliveries before Siraj had him caught at slip. By the 2.4th over, CSK were 29/3. The match was done as a contest — even if the scoreboard had not yet confirmed it.
“Three wickets in the powerplay, including the captain — that broke CSK completely,” said Vegas11 News post-match. “No top-order batter could settle, and once the powerplay ended with the damage done, the rest of the innings was just a matter of time.”
Matt Short gave it a go — 24 off 14 balls, at least showing some intent. But the brightest moment came from Shivam Dube, who produced a stunning 47 off just 17 balls. At a strike rate of 276.47 — with 4 fours and 4 sixes — Dube briefly turned the Ahmedabad night electric. When CSK reached 116/6 in the 10th over with Dube in full flow, a miracle briefly felt possible.
Then Rashid Khan walked back to his mark.
Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada End It Emphatically
If Siraj tore the roof off the chase, Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada brought the whole building down.
Rashid was devastating — 3/18 in 2 overs at an economy of 9.00. He dismissed Shivam Dube, then Anshul Kamboj, then Dewald Brevis in quick succession to shatter CSK’s lower-middle order. In a season where Rashid has already picked up 16 league-stage wickets for Gujarat, this was yet another match-defining spell delivered in the clutch.
Kagiso Rabada was equally merciless — 3/32 in 3.4 overs. The South African pacer dismantled the tail, with Spencer Johnson edging behind off the final ball of the 13th over to seal a complete, emphatic all-out.
Mohammed Siraj was rightly named Player of the Match for his 3/26 in 3 overs. He set the tone in the opening over and never let CSK recover.
“I just backed my line and length,” Siraj said with a calm smile after collecting the award. “When you have 229 on the board, the bowlers just need to execute their plans. Tonight we did exactly that.”
IPL 2026 Playoff Picture After GT vs CSK
The result in this GT vs CSK IPL 2026 match has major implications for the points table with the league stage winding down. Gujarat Titans are now the third confirmed playoff side, joining RCB and SRH. The fourth and final berth remains fiercely contested — Rajasthan Royals (14 points) are in pole position and control their own destiny, while Punjab Kings (13 pts), Delhi Capitals (12 pts), and Chennai Super Kings (12 pts) are still mathematically alive but dependent on other results going their way.
Tonight’s SRH vs RCB clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad will determine which of those two heavyweights locks up a top-two finish and a direct route to Qualifier 1.
As for Gujarat Titans — they head into the playoffs in the kind of form that should worry every other team. A total above 229, three bowlers taking three wickets each, a 89-run margin of victory: this was not a team coasting. This was a team peaking at exactly the right moment.
